LA Law Firm participated in the annual conference IP UKRAINE NOW 2024, organized by the Ukrainian Bar Association

Partner Vitalii Savchuk, Head of Intellectual Property, took part in the second session of the conference, joining the Karl Popper-style debate. Under this format, the panelists are randomly divided into two teams to discuss the proposed positions – conservative and liberal, with the conference participants acting as judges.

The discussion was focused on the need to comply with minimum standards of intellectual property protection at the current stage of Ukraine's development. The discussion focused on the abolition of unlimited intellectual property rights during the war, the prompt implementation of the Bolar Rule into Ukrainian legislation to ensure the launch of generic medicines and the availability of medicines, and the principle of international exhaustion of trademark rights.

Vitalii shared his impressions: At a time when societies are losing the ability to disagree intellectually, debates are a great exercise. When preparing to defend a point of view that is sometimes opposite to your own, you suddenly realize that your opponents also have a motivation and it is also reasonable. At this event, we gave each other such an opportunity. I had to be a conservative for an hour and a half!’

Partner Vitalii Savchuk and associate Oleksandr Tsurkan shared their experience and vision of further trends in intellectual property, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector, and discussed important aspects of patent protection with colleagues.

‘IP UKRAINE NOW is always a reminder of the crucial importance of intellectual property protection for sustainable business development,’ Oleksandr noted.
